Dear Member of Parliament:
It's embarrassing to be a Canadian at this moment in history when the government is failing to take action on the Climate Crisis.
Scientists, think tanks and planners for world governments are actually discussing civilization-ending scenarios while the Harper government keeps fiddling.
Wake up! Do something! And that doesn't mean talking nonsense about carbon capture and no caps on the tar sands.
We need to take a leadership role in drastically reducing our emissions. We need to regain the respect this country once commanded in the world and we need to demonstrate to our children and grandchildren that we love them enough to leave them a livable planet.
Very soon, more than 190 countries will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to draft a new global climate change agreement. Canada must cease its shameful behaviour and become a leader in responsible action.
As a start Parliament needs to pass Bill C-311, The Climate Change Accountability Act, that compels the implementation of a comprehensive plan and a set reporting schedule to achieve emission reductions of 25 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050. There should be no extension passed for this bill.
It is long past the time for the Government of Canada to take meaningful action on the Climate Crisis. I implore you to examine your conscience, contemplate the cost of inaction to future generations of Canadians and then commit this country to action.
Sincerely,
Liz Benneian
