Jan. 4th Update: New Year, New Ways to Take Action

E-mail Print PDF

Oakvillegreen is pleased that locally 2009 ended with our Regional politicians protecting about 33% of Halton’s land as Natural Heritage System. Although the few weeks before the Regional vote were a bit hair-raising, and a lot of work, the end result was worth all our efforts.

Unfortunately, from the global perspective, the year didn’t end on such a high note with the utter failure of the Copenhagen Conference to achieve anything of significance in combating the climate crisis.  As the year progresses, Oakvillegreen will continue to move forward with our Climate Action Plan and keep you informed about what you can do personally, and what you can do as an advocate, to push our federal politicians to take action on this most urgent of issues.

Below, please find some upcoming events that may be of interest.

“Afghanistan: Stay, Go or Something in Between” – A free public forum
Sunday, January 10 at 7 p.m.

Haroon Siddiqui, columnist for the Toronto Star and Sally Armstrong, noted author and contributor to Maclean's Magazine, Chatelaine and other publications will discuss their perspectives on the issue. Both have spent considerable time in Afghanistan and have met many of the leading figures associated with it. Because they hold differing views on the value of past, present and future Canadian involvement there, this will be a stimulating evening about one of the most important and controversial Canadian commitments of our time.

After the presentations, the audience will be invited to ask questions and make brief comments. Canadians in Support of Afghan Women also will be present with a display featuring the two schools for girls that they are supporting. The forum, sponsored by The Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights, will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 10 at St. Jude's Anglican Church, 160 William Street in downtown Oakville.
