An Oakvillegreen Special Event:
Meet the Hanlon Creek Defenders
Thursday, February 25
At dawn one day last summer in Guelph, Ontario, 60 people walked onto an industrial construction site and set up a temporary home, complete with a composting toilet, strawbale first aid tent, lookout tower and kitchen. Within hours, work on Guelph’s much opposed 675-acre Hanlon Creek Business Park, that would destroy the area’s last stand of old growth forest and the habitat of threatened wildlife, was shut down. Find out what happened next when you meet the Hanlon Creek Defenders from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Oakville Room at Oakville’s Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Road from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Please feel free to invite friends to this special event.
Board Member John McMullen takes leave of absence to run in Municipal Election
Oakvillegreen board member John McMullen will take a leave of absence from the board, in accordance with Oakvillegreen policy, to run for the local Council position in Ward 1.
John successfully led the campaign against a paved pathway being constructed in an important migratory bird layover area in the Petro Canada Pipeline Corridor/Shell Park. Oakvillegreen joined forces with him on that issue and subsequently invited him to join the board.
“John has been a very active and valued member of Oakvillegreen’s board participating in tree plantings, representing Oakvillegreen during the Mayor’s monthly meetings with community leaders and acting as spokesperson for Oakvillegreen during my absence. He has shown leadership on local issues, has been active in encouraging involvement of other community groups in Oakvillegreen events and has added thoughtful counsel to our discussions. We are pleased that he will remain an active member of Oakvillegreen, though no longer a board member, during the campaign,” says Liz Benneian, president.

Transition Oakville Discussion
Tuesday, February 23
Topic 1: 7 to 8 p.m. Permeable Driveways - Unpaving the way to the future.
Permeable driveways create a natural filter for ground water rather than allowing toxic runoff to enter the storm drain system. They also don't build up heat and allow for trees and other plants to benefit from rainwater. In our neighbourhood, and on our street, many homeowners have changed their driveways to paving stones or cement. Our family decided to make a decision for our environment by installing an eco friendly driveway instead. Come hear our story and learn how you can unpave the way to the future!
Topic 2: 8 to 9 p.m. Boulevard Gardening - Open discussion and photos of Oakville's banned boulevard gardens and what is being done to allow residents to use this area to plant meaningful boulevard gardens.
No cost. Bonus: great food & fair trade coffee available. Isabella's Cafe, 174 Lakeshore Rd. E, Oakville. Contact www.transitionoakville.ca
